$20-million project aligns with key urban strategy in Rivers District Master Plan.
An adaptable throughfare that supports a variety of user experiences
Through streetscaping upgrades and roadway enhancements, we’re transforming four blocks of Stampede Trail into a multifunctional space—a vibrant retail and entertainment corridor, a multi-modal connector and, for special events, a pedestrian-only festival plaza and urban community space; and a vital interface between the BMO Centre, Scotia Place, and retail development along the corridor.
This $20 million project, funded through our CRL, will enhance the Calgary experience for all who visit The Culture + Entertainment District.
The street will adapt for different purposes—from day-to-day traffic to high-volume access for major events to pedestrian-only uses.
Design features like brick pavers and catenary lighting provide an elevated user experience while nurturing a distinctive sense of place.
Rolled curbs enable smooth transitions from daily use for pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle traffic to a pedestrian-only gathering space.
Next steps along the path to project delivery
The project will unfold in two phases: the first phase, from 14 Avenue to Agriculture Trail, was completed in 2023. The timing for the second phase, from 12 Avenue to 14 Avenue SE, will be assessed as Scotia Place and associated district infrastructure work progress. Highlighting the vast outdoor plaza, spanning nearly 100,000 square feet, this all-season gathering area boasts art installations, nods to the Calgary Stampede’s history, and a rich variety of flora inspired by Alberta's natural scenery.
Critical infrastructure, major vertical builds, development progress, innovative placemaking and collaborative partnerships underpin CMLC’s major accomplishments from 2023. These achievements not only solidify CMLC's role in shaping the city's future but also lay the groundwork for continued urban development and transformative growth for Calgary’s east end in the year ahead.
Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and the Calgary Stampede, as partners in the delivery of the Rivers District Master Plan, are pleased to break ground on the redevelopment of Stampede Trail (formerly Olympic Way). Construction on the vibrant retail corridor and multi-modal connector begins this month.
With important construction underway throughout The Culture + Entertainment District, CMLC and its project partners have developed a new interactive map to help Calgarians navigate the impacts of construction as they travel to and through the area.
The hundreds of LED lights that illuminate Reconciliation Bridge were due to be upgraded this year and CMLC took the opportunity to re-evaluate its community lighting program and develop a new program that would prioritize Indigenous stories in the annual lighting calendar.
CMLC and the Calgary Stampede are committed to the long-term success of the district and remain optimistic that ongoing discussions being led by the City of Calgary ultimately result in a positive outcome for Calgarians and the Rivers District.
This report provides an overview of the engagement efforts led by CMLC specific to the Master Plan process starting in 2017. It details findings of a joint public engagement program in collaboration with the City of Calgary.
